THE IMPACT OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS ON SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT: COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL INSIGHTS FROM WAYANAD,KERALA

Geographical indications (GIs) are essential in promoting lasting rural growth by connecting unique local products to their specific regions. This research examines the potential of GIs to enhance economic value, protect cultural heritage, and support environmental sustainability in Wayanad, Kerala. Through extensive analysis of secondary data and detailed case studies, the study outlines the economic advantages, challenges, and opportunities associated with GIs. Results indicate that GIs significantly increase market value, create jobs, and preserve traditional knowledge. However, obstacles such as high registration costs and lack of awareness are significant hurdles. The study provides policy recommendations focusing on strong legal frameworks, government backing, and effective stakeholder collaboration to optimize the impact of GIs on rural development. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of community engagement and capacity-building initiatives to ensure the long-term viability and strength of GI-based rural economies.
