This poster gives an overview of how the devastating 2011 Joplin, MO tornado initiated a decade of R&D recently culminating in tornado load requirements being developed and adopted into the ASCE 7 Standard and the International Building Code. New science and engineering knowledge on tornado climatology, tornadic winds, and tornadic wind-structure interaction were used to create the first-ever engineering-derived probabilistic tornado wind speed maps that also account for the dependency of tornado risk on the plan size of the building.
