This dataset focuses on georeferencing articles from New Zealand geoscience journals. It analyzes freely available papers published between 1958 and 2015 in three journals: *New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics*, *New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research*, and *New Zealand Journal of Hydrology*. The dataset counts the occurrences of place names matching the gazetteer of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) in the titles, abstracts and full texts of these papers, and generates ISO-standard compliant metadata records that support geospatial query functions.
