This dataset is the Australian part of an international study which aimed to compare different concepts, areas of interest, and knowledge in the field of civic education. There were 29 countries involved in the study, which incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Phase 1 documented what experts and others with an interest in the field in each country believe it is important for 14-year-olds to know about a wide range of civic and political matters. Phase 2 was the testing stage of the study. Information was obtained from nationally representative samples of students about student knowledge, skills, concepts, attitudes and actions with items from the following domains: Democracy, Institutions, Rights and Responsibilities, National Identity, Social Cohesion and Social Diversity. Data collection took place in 1999 and involved 4,000 Year 9 students in 150 schools. Teachers and Principals also provided information about teaching practices and about school population characteristics and resources. Background variables for teachers were age and sex. Background variables for students were age, sex, ethnicity, age at immigration, newspapers/books in home, parents' education and participation in community activities. At ADA, the dataset is held as three data files - Australian IEA Civic Education Study: File Schools (01061-Schools), Australian IEA Civic Education Study: File Teachers (01061-Teachers), and Australian IEA Civic Education Study: File Students (01061-Students). Further information, including technical documentation and research reports, is available from the ACER website at www.acer.edu.au.
