French and German causative verbs with English translations and syntactic-semantic annotations

This dataset provides an annotated inventory of French and German defeasible causative verbs and causative verbs with ad hoc defeasible uses, accompanied by English translations and selected syntactic-semantic properties. More specifically, it encodes for each verb: (i) whether the verb requires an animate object, whether direct or indirect; (ii) whether the causative verb defeasible or non-defeasible in their standard use; (iii) whether the verb is ditransitive; and (iv) whether the verb participates in a causative-anticausative alternation. The dataset is designed as a resource for linguistic research on causation, lexical semantics, and argument realization. This set of verbs forms the empirical basis of the research reported in Martin and Schäfer (2012, 2013, 2017)
