Urban birds chorus through traffic noise, not around it

This repository contains the data and R code accompanying Dickerson & Lockett (2026), Urban birds chorus through traffic noise, not around it. Passive acoustic recordings were collected at 12 urban monitoring sites in Melbourne, Australia, before and after the 2018 and 2019 daylight-saving time transitions. These clock changes displaced the timing of human activity and traffic noise by approximately one hour relative to fixed solar light cues, providing a natural experiment to examine community-level dawn and dusk chorus responses to anthropogenic noise. The deposited dawn and dusk datasets contain acoustic measures of aggregate vocal activity (Acoustic Complexity Index, ACI), soundscape structure (acoustic entropy, H) and low-frequency sound amplitude (RMS) as a proxy for traffic noise, together with temporal, solar, lunar and weather variables. The accompanying R code reproduces the final data preparation, statistical analyses, sensitivity checks and figures reported in the manuscript.
