Ensifer meliloti strain P221 was isolated from rhizoplane of Phragmites australis grown in soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for a long time. This strain was described as a plant growth promoting and heavy metal resistant PAH-degrader. Successful E. meliloti P221-assisted phytoremediation of PAH-contaminated soil has been documented. In this project the genome of this bacterium is studied for better revealing and subsequently more effective implementation its remediating potential in the clean-up of complex-contaminated soils.
