The following dataset contains all surface measurements data related to the article "Multi-scale characterization of joint surface roughness". The IGSN reference is IEBNB0001. Sample description: the files contain surface measurements on a fresh joint surface performed in the active Klieve quarry, Southern Münsterland, Western Germany (51°34’30’’N, 8°18’00’’E). The joint was developed at less than 1 km depth in Turonian glauconitic. Sampling for microscopic characterization was done on a loose part from the main block. Surface elevation measurements of the plumose structure were performed with a LiDAR terrestrial scanner FARO<sup>® </sup>Focus3D X330, then processed using the software SCENE<sup>®</sup> to obtain a referenced 3D point cloud of the joint surface. The 3D point cloud is provided in xyz format in the file “<i>LiDAR data coordinates.xyz</i>” and corresponds to the exported data from the SCENE<sup>® </sup>software. A jpeg file “<i>together_V2.jpeg</i>” shows a photography of the joint surface together with the LiDAR scan results. Furthermore, the authors provide a file “<i>raw_data_LiDAR_measurement.mat</i>” with data scaled as a 2D surface. The file “<i>im_square1.mat</i>” is the selected area on the joint surface used in the article. The three files used for microscopic characterization “<i>im100X.mat”, “im200X.mat” </i>and “<i>im500X.mat</i>” are also provided.Summary and supplementary details: _The jpegfile "<i>together_V2.jpeg</i>" allows a clear identification of the surface location selected for measurement and a photography of the joint surface. Coating of iron-hydroxides and of quartz only on the central part can be observed on the joint surface. However, they are very thin and mimic the plumose structure. Hackles and ridges, revealed by surface measurements, were also identified during in-situ observations._ <i>“LiDAR data coordinates.xyz</i>” shows LiDAR point cloud after exportation in x,y,z format. Note: axes are in the following order. The first column corresponds to the x-direction and the third column corresponds to y-direction. The second column corresponds to the z-direction and elevation is inversed (the lowest values are the maximum values). Units are in meters._ The file "<i>raw_data_LiDAR_measurement.mat</i>" corresponds to the merging of four scans by use of LiDAR technology. Units are in meters, these raw data were not filtered. Users are free to follow the method proposed in the article "Multi-scale characterization of joint surface roughness" to process data. Element size is 0.49 mm._ The file "<i>im_square1.mat</i>" contains the selected surface from LiDAR scan measurement after filtering. Element size is 0.49 mm._ The file "<i>im100X.mat</i>" contains the surface measurement by use of Keyence microscope at 100X magnification. Units are in micrometers. Element size is 8.46 µm. _ A file " <i>im200X.mat</i> " contains the surface measurement by use of Keyence microscope at 200X magnification. Units are in micrometers. Element size is 5.15 µm. _ A file " <i>im500X.mat</i> " contains the surface measurement by use of Keyence microscope at 500X magnification. Units are in micrometers. Element size is 2.1 µm.
