Pulsars with high surface magnetic field-strengths (high-B pulsars) provide a rich seam of study for both observers and theorists alike. Studies of their population properties have the potential to answer several fundamental questions about the nature of these objects and how they fit in with the overall pulsar population. These questions include: How do their magnetic fields arise? How is pulsed radio emission produced above the quantum critical field? How do the various populations of high-B pulsars evolve with time? In this proposal we will use the Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver system on Parkes to complete a Southern-Sky radio census of these high-B pulsars in order to determine their geometric and emission properties with the aim of providing the answers to the questions posed above.

表面磁场强度较高的脉冲星(high-B pulsars)为观测天文学家与理论天文学家共同提供了极具研究价值的课题方向。对这类脉冲星的群体属性展开研究,有望解答诸多关于其本质、以及它们如何融入整体脉冲星群体的核心问题。这些核心问题包括:其磁场的起源机制是什么?量子临界磁场之上的射电脉冲辐射是如何产生的?不同类别的高磁场脉冲星群体随时间的演化规律如何?本研究计划将利用帕克斯(Parkes)望远镜上的超宽带低频率(UWL)接收系统,完成针对这类高磁场脉冲星的南天射电巡天工作,以测定其几何结构与辐射特性,最终为解答上述核心问题提供支撑。
