Three ground stone artifacts collected at the Akers Ferry site (23SH23), located in the
Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri, were examined to obtain information concerning
plants and/or animals that might have been processed using these tools. This multi-component
site contains features, a midden, and lithic and ceramic artifacts reflecting occupations from the
early Archaic through Missippian Traditions. Each ground stone was large enough to dedicate
a portion of the surface to pollen, starch, phytolith, protein residue, and Fourier Transform
Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) analyses. In addition, two charcoal samples were submitted for
identification.
