Mining is a source of great economic activities that contribute to employment, GDP and growth. However, mining is also associated with adverse impacts on the environment, and human health conditions. Although enough evidence is provided on these negative impacts, we know little on how mining activities may impact on academic performance of the youth. Here, we demonstrate significant negative correlations between mining and academic performance of high school learners in South Africa. We believe this study is a contribution that has practical applications for policy makers.

矿业是拉动经济活动的重要源头，可为就业、国内生产总值（GDP）及经济增长作出贡献。然而，矿业活动也会对环境与人类健康状况造成负面影响。尽管已有充分证据证实这些负面影响，但目前我们对矿业活动如何影响青少年的学业表现仍知之甚少。本研究揭示了南非高中学生的学业表现与矿业活动之间存在显著负相关关系。我们认为本研究可为政策制定者提供具有实际应用价值的参考。
