浙江大学的前身是1897年与杭州创办的求是书院，1901年改名为浙江求是大学堂，1902年改成浙江大学堂，1903年改称浙江高等学堂，1912年改称浙江高等学校，1913年夏因整理学制而停办。1927年7月因实行大学区制而在杭州成立国立第三中山大学，改组浙江公立工业专门学校为大学工学院，改组浙江公立农业专门学校为大学劳农学院，并设大学行政处，兼理全省教育行政事宜。

The predecessor of Zhejiang University is Qiushi Academy, which was founded in Hangzhou in 1897. In 1901, it was renamed Zhejiang Qiushi University Hall; in 1902, it was renamed Zhejiang University Hall; in 1903, it was renamed Zhejiang Higher Academy; in 1912, it was renamed Zhejiang Higher School. It was suspended in the summer of 1913 due to the reorganization of the educational system. In July 1927, with the implementation of the University District System, National Third Sun Yat-sen University was established in Hangzhou. The former Zhejiang Public Industrial Specialized School was reorganized into the University’s College of Engineering, the former Zhejiang Public Agricultural Specialized School was reorganized into the University’s College of Labor and Agriculture, and the University’s Administrative Office was set up to concurrently oversee educational administrative affairs of the entire province.
