Validation of the UPSIT for residents of central Russia

Standard olfactory tests are needed to quantify human olfactory function for clinical and research purposes. Tests that rely on odor identification abilities often require cross-cultural adaptation. In this study, we aimed to determine the applicability of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT®) in a culturally distinct population. We used a commercially available North American version of the test to assess olfactory function in residents of central Russia. The participants (n=252) were between 18 and 87 years of age with no apparent health problems. The test was administered using our original translation of the answer options into Russian. We also introduced additional surveys aimed to determine familiarity of test subjects with UPSIT items and their ratings of the intensity.
