This letter, signed by the Earl of Lucan on behalf of the British Red Cross and Order of St John (Dept. for wounded and missing) contains an eye-witness account of Pte. Green's death by machine-gun fire at "Tretry" (probably "Tertry" which is on the Somme-Peronne front), and was received by his parents very shortly after the letter acknowledging that he was a P o W.
Editor's Comment:
Pte. 316448 Leonard E. Green, 1/5th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, was reported Missing in Action on 23rd March 1918 and officially declared dead, twice, before his status as a Prisoner of War was confirmed.
