Photograph of Hopi ("Moki") dancers throwing snakes into the circle of the sacred meal during the Snake Dance ceremony at Mishongnovi (Mashongnavi), Arizona, ca.1898. About a dozen dancers form a rough line. They wear highly decorated kilts with animal pelts hanging from the back, and bracelets on their upper arms. They are decorated on chest, face, and arms with white paint or dried mud. A few dwellings of the pueblo are visible in the background. A large stone box (?) sits in the foreground.
