The growing conditions of Baden-Württemberg for forest tree species are diverse. From this point of view, the country is divided into a large number of different regions. The regional structure first highlights the local characteristics that distinguish a region from the other regions of the country. The first level of the regional division consists of the seven growing areas. The division of the growing areas into regional units depends on the growth and competitive behaviour of the tree species, which depends on the climate. Within a regional unit, the climatic conditions should be similar. Regional units with large differences in altitude are therefore additionally divided vertically and zonally according to altitude levels. The zonal structure of the regional units includes the elevation levels: - planar - kollin - submontan - montan - highmontane The vertical extension of the elevation levels is not fixed to altitude meters, but to the climatic conditions within the respective regional unit. There is therefore no nationwide uniform elevation framework for the elevation levels in the Southwest German procedure.
