We performed 16S rRNA analysis on sputum samples collected from 75 adults with CF and prospectively obtained clinical data during an 8-year follow up period. Using a viability PCR technique, the total airway microbiota and the obligate anaerobic microbiota present in sputum were compared with clinical measures, i.e. 5% FEV1 decline or death and lung transplantation after 1 year in a cohort predominantly colonised with P. aeruginosa.
