## Description of the data and file structure
**Sequence alignment and Phylogenetic analysis**
The ITS sequences of the newly described Cortinarius species plus close relatives were retrieved from a nBLAST search against GenBank ([https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank)), UNITE database ([https://unite.ut.ee](https://unite.ut.ee)), BOLD SYSTEMS ([https://boldsystems.org/](https://boldsystems.org/)), and relevant published phylogenies. The ITS dataset was aligned using the online version of the multiple sequence alignment program MAFFT v. 7
([https://mafft.cbrc.jp/alignment/software/](https://mafft.cbrc.jp/alignment/software/)) with the L-INS-i strategy. The alignment was manually checked and trimmed with the conserved motifs in MEGA v. 7.
