The initiation of embryonic gene expression in ascidian embryos is tightly regulated by the numbers of DNA replication. A contribution of DNA methylation has been suggested on the clock mechanism that counts the rounds of DNA replication. By whole genome bisulfite sequencing, we have characterized the DNA methylation changes in early developmental stages of an ascidian, Ciona intestinalis.
