This dataset contains information about the location, time, and characteristics of Trans-Ionospheric Pulse Pairs (TIPPs) detected by the Radio Frequency Sensor (RFS) and matched to lightning geolocated by the Global Lightning Detection Network (GLD360) and the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN). The dataset is formatted in two CSV files, one for the TIPPs matched to lightning strokes from GLD360, and another for TIPPs matched to NLDN. The GLD360 CSV file contains the following column headers: “date”, an integer value for the date of the TIPP in format YYYYMMDD; “time”, the time of the event in UTC in format HH:MM:SS.ms; “lat”, the latitude of the lightning stroke believed to cause the TIPP; “lon”, the longitude of the stroke; “amp_ratio”, the calculated amplitude ratio of the pair of pulses in the TIPP, defined as the amplitude of the second pulse divided by the amplitude of the first; “elevation_angle”, the angle of the line of sight from the lightning stroke to RFS and the line to horizon; “height”, the altitude in meters of the lightning stroke estimated by the pulse separation and the geometry of the lightning stroke and RFS; and ”seawater”, a flag that is 1 if the lightning stroke is over seawater and 0 otherwise. The NLDN CSV file contains all of these columns, as well as an additional column with header “peak_current_ka”, showing the peak current as identified by NLDN in kA.
