The recent sequencing and assembly of the G. nigrifrons transcriptome has provided a valuable tool for exploring transcriptional changes in an important vector of plant pathogens. Under the premise that the differences detected contribute to MFSV infection and transmission capability, we used next generation sequencing to whether transcriptional differences exist among G. nigrifrons transmitters, acquirers and non-acquirers. Using this approach, we simultaneously generated sequence polymorphism data for MFSV, which was examined for potential transmission group differences associated with vector competence. Transcriptome analysis revealed considerable expression and sequences differences among transmission groups, and identified several candidate genes that may be associated with G. nigrifrons vector competence. The insights provided in this study begin to define functional roles for specific leafhopper genes in the virus transmission process
