The ASGS ensures that these statistics are comparable and geospatially integrated and provides users with a coherent set of standard regions so that they can access, visualise, analyse and understand statistics.The 2016 ASGS will be used for the 2016 Census of Population and Housing and progressively introduced into other ABS data collections. The ABS encourages the use of the ASGS by other organisations to improve the comparability and usefulness of statistics generally, and in analysis and visualisation of statistical and other data.The ABS Structures are a hierarchy of regions developed for the release of ABS statistical information. This dataset was captured by digitising the best available cadastral mapping at a variety of scales and accuracies, ranging from 1:500 to 1:250 000 according to the National Mapping Council of Australia, Standards of Map Accuracy (1975). Therefore, the position of the feature instance will be within 0.5mm at map scale for 90% of the well-defined points. 澳大利亚统计局（ABS）统计地理标准边界第四级统计区域（SA 4）将新南威尔士州全域划分为若干研究区域，用于依据《1905年人口普查与统计法（联邦）》开展统计数据采集工作。
澳大利亚统计地理标准（Australian Statistical Geography Standard, ASGS）构建了统一框架，整合了澳大利亚统计局（ABS）及其他众多机构用于采集、发布与分析地理分类统计数据的所有区域体系。ASGS可确保此类统计数据具备可比性且实现地理空间整合，并为用户提供一套统一的标准区域体系，便于用户对统计数据进行访问、可视化、分析与解读。
2016版ASGS将应用于2016年人口与住房普查，并将逐步推广至ABS其他数据采集项目中。ABS鼓励其他机构采用ASGS，以整体提升统计数据及各类统计与其他数据的分析、可视化成果的可比性与实用价值。
ABS区域体系是为发布ABS统计信息而构建的区域层级体系，主要组成部分如下：
第一级统计区域（Statistical Areas Level 1）
第二级统计区域（Statistical Areas Level 2）
第三级统计区域（Statistical Areas Level 3）
第四级统计区域（Statistical Areas Level 4）
区域边界（地方政府区域、郊区）

澳大利亚统计局地理标准边界——统计区域用于划定地理范围，以支撑州域与区域尺度的统计及社会经济分析。通过整合海量数据与信息，该体系可用于统计边界内的各类分析工作。
ABS负责维护ASGS以及用于2011年之前人口普查数据的澳大利亚标准地理分类（Australian Standard Geographical Classification, ASGC）。

精度说明：
本数据集与宗地与房产数字数据集保持一致的位置关系与对齐精度。本数据集通过数字化获取，所用的地籍测绘数据来自符合澳大利亚国家测绘局1975年《地图精度标准》的多比例尺、多精度的最优可用资料，比例尺范围为1:500至1:250000。依据该标准，90%的明确特征点的位置误差在对应比例尺下不超过0.5毫米：即比例尺1:500对应误差0.25米，1:2000对应1米，1:4000对应2米，1:25000对应12.5米，1:50000对应25米，1:100000对应50米。目前，本数据集的空间位置与精度升级工作正在持续推进中。
