Mycobacterium phlei, also known as the Timothy Grass Bacillus, is a rapid growing thermotolerant Mycobacterium spp. isolated as early as 1898 from timothy grass. The mycobacterium-specific compound Mycobactin was first discovered in this species. Its cell wall complex is able to stimulate the immune system and is therefore used as an adjuvant in certain anti-cancer vaccines. The Mycobacterium phlei CCUG 21000 was obtained from the University of Göteborg.
