Strictly anaerobic, Gram-positive, motile bacterium. Cells are catalase-negative and oxidase negative after anaerobic growth with rhamnose. Cells are rod-shaped. Growth mode is restricted to mixed product fermentation yielding acetate, propionate, ethanol, butyrate, and 1-propanol as major fermentation products. Oxygen and nitrate are not utilized as external electron acceptors. Addition of small amounts of yeast extract allows reproducible growth of laboratory cultures. The G+C content was 40.6% G+C.
