The Impact of Human Activity on RSSI and Smartphone Sensor Measurements

Experiments were carried out in a conference hall with dimensions of 8 m × 16 m and a ceiling height of 4.2 m. Four Wi-Fi access points (APs) were installed at the corners of the rectangular area to ensure maximum spatial coverage. A smartphone was positioned at the geometric center of the environment to maintain a consistent line of sight to all APs. In each experimental scenario, Wi-Fi scans were collected at 2-second intervals using a custom-developed Android smartphone application, while all other parameters were kept constant. Each run consisted of 500 scans, corresponding to approximately 17 minutes of continuous data collection. RSSI measurements were recorded at the central location under varying human density conditions with moving participants. The tested scenarios included crowd sizes of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 individuals. This dataset provides raw RSSI values along with corresponding human density conditions, enabling the study of crowd-induced signal degradation and its impact on indoor positioning systems.
