Transportation sector CO₂ emissions in Canada 1970-2023

In 2023, transportation in Canada released 166 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) into the atmosphere. This was an increase of 1.3 percent in comparison to 2022 levels. In 2020, Canada's transportation emissions recorded a significant drop due to the outbreak of COVID-19, which had a major impact on mobility. Nevertheless, annual transportation emissions in Canada have experienced considerable growth in recent decades, having risen by more than 30 percent since 1990. Road transportation is by far the largest source of Canada's transportation emissions.
