The haploid basidiomycetous yeast Pseudozyma flocculosa is related to the plant pathogenic smut fungus Ustilago maydis. Many of the effector genes detected in U. maydis are conserved in P. flocculosa, but so far no mating partner has been identified for P. flocculosa, which would allow to test its potential to colonize grasses. P. flocculosa has been shown to acts as a biocontrol agent against powdery mildews. The haploid strain DAOM196992 from BCCN/IHM from the Belgian Coordinated Collection of Microorganisms in Brussels was sequenced by PacBio.
