This map shows a typological classification of the building in Flanders, dividing it into cores, ribbons and scattered buildings. This classification is based on a maximum morphological approach. This contrasts with a policy delineation, such as, for example, the legally defined boundaries of areas through spatial implementation plans, or a delineation that takes significant account of the level of activity, such as, for example, the classification into urban, peri-urban and rural areas (Poelmans et al., 2020). This classification is fully automatic using an algorithm specifically developed for this purpose based on a number of spatial variables. It built on the methodology developed in previous studies that sought to map in detail lint and core construction. The algorithm used was adjusted during interactive working sessions with experts from VITO and the Environment Department. As a result, the following geodata layers were created: a polygonne layer with the cores as contiguous built-up areas with a total size of at least 5 ha and housing a total of at least 20 families, and with a sufficiently high density of buildings (number > 30 buildings within a radius of 100 m), or a sufficiently high surface area (footprint > 9 500 m² within a radius of 100 m) to buildings or a sufficiently high density of households (number of > 60 households within a radius of 100 m), a line layer with ribbons consisting of streets located outside the core, which are built for a minimum of 200 m contiguous or of which at least 80 % of the total street length is built on a polygonne layer, and all of these sites are not listed as a polygonne layer with scattered buildings. The large-scale reference file (GRB) was used as the source of the buildings and administrative parcels. The Road Register was used for the roads. The land take was made using the same name indicator published by the Department of Environment. For household density inside the cores, the same name indicator was used as published by the Department of Environment. The military areas are those legally defined by the regional plans. The business parks are based on the GIS business parks of the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (VLAIO). The camping and holiday areas come from the Biological Validation Card (BWK) and the RuiTeR database of Toerisme Vlaanderen.
