Gap disturbance affects forest structure and function by altering microhabitats and community succession. This paper reviews the underlying mechanisms by which gap disturbance influences species composition (biological characteristics and environmental factors), stand structure (community components and architecture), and ecological functions. In response to current research demands, key future research directions are proposed, including gap area thresholds, closure mechanisms, the impacts of ecological processes, and the relationship with productivity. Studies have demonstrated that gap disturbance offers advantages in promoting forest regeneration and optimizing stand structure, providing a scientific basis for the transformation of low-efficiency planted forests.
