This velocity dataset was produced to understand how wintertime glacier velocities changed at the terminus of Kaskawulsh Glacier in the context of the 2016 drainage of proglacial Slims Lake. The partial drainage of Slims Lake in May 2016 provided a unique opportunity to study how a change in proglacial lake volume influences glacier velocities at the terminus. Lake volume change between 2015 and 2016 was calculated, and the potential for terminus floatation was determined for 2015, 2016 and 2020. Change in floatation status was determined as a cause of slower glacier velocities after the lake drained, explaining 45% of the annual average velocity within 7 km of the glacier terminus.
