In this proposal we aim at performing x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). During a previously granted beamtime for XMCD (2021035105), we could obtain very important results for epitaxial films of the 2D ferromagnet Fe5-xGeTe2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2; FGT) [1,2]. Now we plan to investigate Ni-doped FGT thin films, also grown by MBE. We propose to carry out a systematic and detailed investigation of the mechanisms associated with magnetic ordering in these material systems as a function of Ni composition. Understanding how the magnetic properties changes as a function of doping for thin films grown with high precision by MBE is highly relevant, not only from a fundamental viewpoint, but also for the development of wafer-scale 2D magnetic materials offering tailored properties for spintronic applications.
