Ky KYTC Kentucky Highway Freight Network

Set of roadways on which freight is hauled in Kentucky. It was derived through analysis of data regarding annual average daily truck traffic (AADTT) and functional classification extracted from the Highway Information System in December 2014 and further analysis of connectivity to intermodal facilities and the network. Updates were made in March 2016 to route segments on which there had been major revision in alignment or Route ID since the original analysis. This network was developed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Planning, Modal Programs Branch and is intended to be used in the data-driven transportation planning process. This GeoJSON file contains 1,193 line features representing Kentucky's Highway Freight Network, a designation system managed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). The network spans approximately 7,297 miles across all 120 Kentucky counties and encompasses all 12 KYTC highway districts (Paducah, Jackson, Pikeville, Somerset, Louisville, Flemingsburg, Covington, Elizabethtown, Bowling Green, Manchester, Madisonville, and Lexington). Each segment is classified into one of four Kentucky Highway Freight Network (KHFN) designation tiers based on traffic volume and connectivity importance: Tier 1 (56 segments): Primary Highway Freight Network plus routes with AADT over 7,000 Tier 2 (95 segments): Interstates, Parkways, and routes with AADT between 4,000-7,000 Tier 3 (665 segments): Functional class above local with AADT 500-4,000 providing regional connectivity Tier 4 (377 segments): Routes with AADT under 500 for local access or regional connectivity Feature attributes include route identifiers, milepost ranges, county and district information, route prefixes (Interstate, US, KY), and designation dates. This layer supports freight planning, infrastructure prioritization, and transportation analysis for goods movement across the Commonwealth.
