The dataset relates to the pollination ecology of watermelon and consists of three separate data files; 1) data extracted from published articles, 2) pollen morphology and pollen-pistil interactions and 3) insect visitation rates and pollinator effectiveness. Data were collected in different methods in each data file and were used in thesis chapters separately; 1) articles were selected through a systematic review process and extracted data on the relative abundance of floral visitors and their pollination effectiveness in pollination metrics, 2) flower samples of five different watermelon cultivars and hand-pollinated crosses (triploid x diploid and triploid x triploid) were collected from the farms and acetolysed pollen to measure morphological traits and pistils were processed to observe pollen tubes through a fluorescence microscope under UV light and 3) insect flower counts were obtained through observation transects in watermelon farms and pollinator effectiveness was measured based on their single visits pollen counts.

本数据集聚焦西瓜传粉生态学研究,包含三个独立的数据文件:1)从已发表学术文献中提取的数据集,2)花粉形态与花粉-雌蕊互作数据集,3)昆虫访花频率与传粉者有效性数据集。各数据文件采用不同的采集方法,且分别应用于学位论文的不同章节:1)通过系统综述流程筛选文献,提取传粉相关指标中花访客的相对丰度及其传粉有效性数据;2)从农场采集5个不同西瓜栽培品种的花样本,以及人工授粉杂交组合(三倍体×二倍体、三倍体×三倍体),对花粉进行乙酰解处理以测量其形态性状,同时对雌蕊样本进行前处理,通过紫外光下的荧光显微镜观察花粉管生长情况;3)在西瓜农场设置观测样带开展观测以获取昆虫访花计数,并基于单次访花的花粉计数测定传粉者的传粉有效性。
