Images and CAD from an Archaeological Evaluation at Snook Acres, Front Street, Witton Gilbert, County Durham, January 2023

This collection comprises images and CAD from an archaeological evaluation at land adjoining Snook Acres, Front Street, Witton Gilbert, County Durham. This work was undertaken by Rocket Heritage and Archaeology Ltd in January 2023. A total of 11 trenches were excavated, revealing three post-medieval culverts, a post-medieval field boundary, along with two 20th century building surfaces. These remains appear to correspond with post-medieval agricultural use and the subsequent 19th and early 20th century housing development rather than potential for late prehistoric development outlined as part of the original heritage scoping. These archaeological remains have limited evidential value regarding the development of housing and settlement in the late 19th and early 20th century in the North East. Overall, the site has been extensively disturbed by the subsquent demolition and later road development. As a result, this report does not recommend further archaeological works for this site.
