From 1983 until 1989 NOAA-NCEI compiled the NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database from journal articles, technical reports and unpublished sources from other institutions. At the time it was the most extended data compilation on ferromanganese deposits world wide. Initially published in a proprietary format incompatible with present day standards it was jointly decided by AWI and NOAA to transcribe this legacy data into PANGAEA. This transfer is augmented by a careful checking of the original sources when available and the encoding of ancillary information (sample description, method of analysis...) not present in the NOAA-MMS database.

1983年至1989年间,美国国家海洋和大气管理局国家环境信息中心(NOAA-NCEI)从期刊论文、技术报告及其他机构的未公开资料中,汇编构建了NOAA-MMS海洋矿物地球化学数据库(NOAA-MMS Marine Minerals Geochemical Database)。彼时,该数据库是全球范围内覆盖范围最广的铁锰矿床(ferromanganese deposits)数据集汇编成果。该数据库最初以专有格式发布,与现行数据标准不相兼容,为此德国阿尔弗雷德·魏格纳研究所(AWI)与NOAA共同决议,将这批遗留数据转录至PANGAEA数据库。本次数据迁移工作还辅以严谨的溯源校验环节:若可获取原始资料,则对其进行细致核查,并补充编码NOAA-MMS数据库未涵盖的辅助信息(如样品描述、分析方法等)。
