The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of algae cultivation on the microbial community present in winery wastewater. This study was part of a broader effort to elucidate mechanisms of interaction between algae and bacteria in wastewater. Samples of the wastewater were collected on site and were subsequently extracted of DNA for sequencing of the "original" microbial community's 16S rRNA gene. The community was subsequently grown in wastewater added to photobioreactors in the presence of one of two algae strains, Auxenochlorella protothecoides and Chlorella sorokiniana. As a control, the microbial community was also grown in wastewater in photobioreactors without algae. Samples from all of the bioreactors were collected for DNA extraction and subsequent sequencing.
