Our NLP-based algorithm looks for signals of journalistic quality, which means that a reporter has put more effort into that piece of content and a reader will receive it a different way. Our data can be used to differentiate between the relative weight of various news articles and can be combined with other data such as sentiment. Because our data is based on the text itself, it can be used the second a piece of text exists online, rather than waiting for signals such as engagement. Overtone can score articles on various categories, sub-categories and topics, depending on the needs of the client. Oftentimes this is based on interest in a particular topic, for example articles about ESG, and a particular set of news sources, such as non-local news outlets in North America and Europe. Topics that run on our global list of sources pull from 4,500 different outlets. These outlets include general news as well as business-focused outlets and trade publications. Our scores are accessible via an API for a particular url or body text, charged by API call. Arrangements can also be made for recurring data delivery on particular topics or from particular sources, delivered once the article and accompanying data exists in our database.
