Historic District (MHC)

This data layer intends to identify, describe areas that are of historical, architectural, or archaeological importance to the community, the state, or the nation. A comprehensive digital inventory of a town's historical assets serves as the basis for all future preservation activities. This digital inventory becomes part of a statewide inventory and enables Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) staff and local preservationists to make consistent and informed preservation decisions. This geographically-referenced data layer of State Register of Historic Places (SRHP) datalayer consists areas which represent boundaries of significant historic properties with legal designations under several specific local, state and federal statutes. The SRHP was established by MGL ch. 9 ss. 26-27c as amended by Chapter 152 of the Acts of 1982 and Chapter 254 of the Acts of 1985, and is maintained by the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) in the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
