The Journal of the Gaoler of Mudgee Gaol consists of printed forms, on the left side listing variable times for the opening of the gaol, times for sweepers leaving the wings, and the time of dismissal of warders after searching. The listings are sometimes ticked or filled in, but other times left blank, with varying times given for the range of duties provided. The first page for 6 September 1904 lists number of male officers (2), and female officers (1), adding up to ‘full strength of gaol’- 3 - plus if any were absent, providing listings of how many and names, and the cause of absence – whether on leave, sick, or on escort. Also listed are the number of prisoners in gaol last night; whether male or female, when received, when discharged, condition of rations (good), requests of prisoners (nil), condition of cells and furniture (clean and in good order), if present at all musters (yes), number of prisoners locked up awaiting Visiting Justice (none), the time sweepers leave the wings (8.30am), number of officers off duty last Saturday afternoon (none), and Sunday (none), the time of dismissal of warders after searching (5.45), divine service (none), choir practice (none), followed by female wing – condition of cells and furniture (clean and in good order), requests of female prisoners (none), and visitations to night-watchmen.On the second page ‘Directions’ was frequently left blank, but on other pages there were requests for hours of duty to be reduced, inspections of premises listed, reports on tools, and recommendations that the yards required gravelling. Further down the page ‘Important Occurrences’ listed the time the gaol was opened at 6.30am, with prisoners to the yard at 6.35am. Warder Donovan was on duty from 6.30am, but with variable finishing times. Rations were received and inspected, with prisoners to their cells for breakfast from 7 to 8, dinner 12 to 1, and tea at 4.10pm. The gaol was inspected at 10am, with supervised evening searching and locks tested at 4.30pm, with the Acting Gaoler visiting the gaol at 7, 9, and 10.30pm on several occasions with variable times on other dates.Mr T. Piper was the Acting Gaoler from 6 September 1904 until 1 October 1904, when he handed over charge of the gaol to Acting Gaoler Wheeler at 7 pm, but on 3 October 1904 Acting Gaoler John A. Wheeler left for Dubbo to attend a circuit court, so Mr W. Guest took over as a temporary Acting Gaoler until 17 October 1904 when John A. Wheeler returned at 7am.Loose at the front of the volume is a typescript identified as being from Ernest Hume's History of Mudgee, pages 149-151, which includes a section on the history of Mudgee Gaol.
(The Journal of the Gaoler of Mudgee Gaol)》数据集包含印刷制式表单,左侧栏依次列有监狱开放的可变时段、清扫人员离开监区的时间,以及狱警完成搜身后的离岗时间。
