The study evaluated the use of thermal pretreatment with acetic acid on banana processing residues, co-digested with sanitary sewage, to enhance sugar release and increase biogas production in anaerobic reactors. Integrated two-stage assays (acidogenic and methanogenic) showed that pretreatment promoted carbohydrate and COD removal, as well as increased hydrogen and methane generation. Metagenomic analysis revealed the predominant role of Clostridium in hydrogen production and Methanothrix in methanogenesis. The concentration of 5% acetic acid achieved the best performance, demonstrating potential for application in agro-industrial residues to improve biogas production efficiency.
