资源简介:
This dataset compiles archival information on credit schemes directed toward African populations in colonial Kenya during the early 1950s (c.1950–1955). It brings together evidence on agricultural and small business loan programmes administered under various government-led initiatives, including traders’ loan schemes and agricultural development credit. The data document the structure and operation of these schemes, including borrower categories (e.g. African farmers and traders), geographic distribution, institutional arrangements, and stated loan purposes. Rather than reflecting market-based lending, the dataset captures forms of credit allocation organised through administrative and policy frameworks, often involving the colonial government, district authorities, and African local councils. The material has been systematically extracted from records held at the Kenya National Archives (Nairobi). These sources include government reports, administrative correspondence, and policy documents relating to African credit provision. As such, the dataset reflects the documentary logic of colonial administration and should be understood as evidence of official policy and practice rather than comprehensive financial records. While detailed financial variables such as loan amounts, interest rates, or repayment outcomes are not consistently available, the dataset provides structured information on the design, implementation, and spatial targeting of credit schemes. It is therefore particularly suited for the study of colonial development policy, state intervention in rural and commercial credit, and the institutional conditions shaping African access to finance. The dataset has been standardised into a relational format to facilitate quantitative and qualitative analysis of credit allocation, institutional participation, and regional patterns within colonial Kenya.
