Since the launch of Landsat 1 on July 23, 1972, the program had successfully launched satellites up to Landsat 5 by March 1, 1984. The launch of Landsat 6 ended in failure. Landsat 7 was launched on April 15, 1999, and still undertakes critical Earth observation missions to this day.

In terms of data product specifications, the most notable differences between Landsat 7 and Landsat 5 are: Landsat 7 added a 15-meter resolution panchromatic band (PAN band); the data for Band 6 was split into low-gain and high-gain datasets, with its spatial resolution upgraded from 120 meters to 60 meters.
