This series is comprised of one bundle of A5-sized forms, each beginning with the heading: "Return by the Crown Land Agent at Hillston of Special Leases applied for, tendered for, or applied for after time for tender, lodged during the week ending ..."The special lease tenure was introduced in 1884 as a means by which land could be leased for a number of miscellaneous purposes. Purposes for which these Leases could be granted included: residence, grazing and agriculture. The term of a special lease was originally twenty eight years and later could be any period up to forty years.Conditions for special leases varied according to the circumstances in each case, but generally required the land to be fenced, and to be used solely for the purpose for which the Lease is granted. The conditions for each special lease were determined by the Land Board, as was the annual rent.Each entry contains the following information: application number, name, address, date received, mode to be acquired, area, portion or block, purpose, parish, county, shire, deposit on Crown improvements, deposit and survey fee, amount of rent gazetted, and amount of rent tendered.The last entry in the Register of special leases from the Hillston Lands Office is number 1935/7. The first entry in this series of Returns of special leases is number 1935/8.
