A War Book is a document laying down by detailed schedules, the actions to be taken by each department in the event of war or the imminent possibility of war.This file (B39/1774) contains papers and correspondence relating to the compilation of the State War Book, 1939. Much of the correspondence relates to the furnishing of information by Government departments and the preparation by the various departments of the "action detail", which was required, on emergency, to implement the scheduled instructions contained in the War Book.Included with the papers is a War Book Messages Despatch Book which records the despatch and receipt of messages under War Book action. The final entries made in this book relate to messages despatched on 4 Sep 1939 under CS/18(c) of the War Book: "Notify ALL DEPARTMENTS that a state of War has been declared..."(6/5665). 1 box. Note: This description is extracted from Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, 3rd Edition 2000.
