Supplementary Material for: Prevalence and Determinants of Parathyroid Dysfunction in Elderly Patients on Hemodialysis

<b><i>Background:</i></b> The goal of this study was to investigate underlying factors of parathyroid dysfunction in elderly patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A total of 286 patients on maintenance hemodialysis were included. Hemoglobin, serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum calcium, serum phosphorus (P), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), and serum albumin (Alb) were measured and analyzed both before and after dialysis. <b><i>Results:</i></b> A higher incidence of low iPTH level (&lt;150 pg/l) was observed in the elderly group than that in the non-elderly group (55.8 vs. 36.7%, p &lt; 0.05). Elderly patients had a shorter dialysis duration, lighter dry weight, lower concentrations of BUN, Scr, P, iPTH, Alb and standard protein nitrogen present rate (nPNA) compared to that of non-elderly group patients (p &lt; 0.05). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Low iPTH level occurs more frequently in elderly hemodialysis patients. Furthermore, age, serum P, serum Alb and nPNA were independently associated with a low iPTH level.

**背景**：本研究旨在探讨维持性血液透析老年患者甲状旁腺功能异常的潜在影响因素。
**方法**：共纳入286例维持性血液透析患者。于透析前后对患者的血红蛋白、血清肌酐（serum creatinine, Scr）、血尿素氮（blood urea nitrogen, BUN）、血钙、血磷（serum phosphorus, P）、全段甲状旁腺激素（intact parathyroid hormone, iPTH）以及血清白蛋白（serum albumin, Alb）进行检测与分析。
**结果**：老年组患者的低iPTH水平（<150 pg/L）发生率显著高于非老年组（55.8% vs 36.7%，p<0.05）。与非老年组患者相比，老年组患者透析时长更短、干体重更低，血尿素氮（BUN）、血清肌酐（Scr）、血磷（P）、iPTH、血清白蛋白（Alb）及标准蛋白氮呈现率（standard protein nitrogen present rate, nPNA）浓度均更低，差异均具有统计学意义（p<0.05）。
**结论**：维持性血液透析老年患者的低iPTH水平发生率更高。此外，年龄、血磷（P）、血清白蛋白（Alb）及nPNA均与低iPTH水平独立相关。
