Fine scale temporal changes in mercury accumulation in Labrador ringed seals (2008-2011)

The purpose of this study is to better understand factors influencing intra- and inter- annual variation in mercury (Hg) levels in ringed seals from northern Labrador. We determined Hg concentrations along individual ringed seal whiskers and claws using cutting-edge technology. While ringed seal whiskers grow throughout the year and are shed annually providing within-year changes in Hg accumulation, claws grow throughout the seal life providing both within-year and across-year trends of Hg accumulation. A change in food web structure due to changing sea ice conditions could have a profound effect on Hg exposure for arctic species such as ringed seal. Results of this research will contribute to a better understanding of factors affecting geographic variation in Hg accumulation in seals, and the effects of climate change on ringed seal food web structure and Hg levels.
