This study provides a high taxonomic resolution comparison of bacterial populations in blood from orally healthy subjects and those with severe periodontitis (pre-treatment). Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted from intact bacterial cells only using the MolYsis Complete5 system (Molzym GmbH Bremen, Germany). This eliminates cell-free DNA and provides information on potentially viable bacterial populations only.
