<p>The Disharoon-Ferguson Family Collection contains 1 folder and 3 negatives with images related to the Disharoon and Ferguson Families, ca. 1848 - 1909. Included in the collection are a photograph of the Disharoon Bros. General MDSE in Villa Ridge, Franklin County, MO, ca. 1909; a portrait of Lucy Francis (nee Ferguson) Disharoon; a portrait of Philip Gooch Ferguson; and copy negatives and photographs of the Santa Cruz Banner newspaper, vol. 1, no. 1, pp. 1-3, March 19, 1848, featuring an article by Philip Gooch Ferguson. </p>
<p>Disharoon Bros. General MDSE was operated by Fergus and Russel Disharoon, opened in 1897, and was located in Villa Ridge, Franklin County, MO. The photograph of the store in the collection contains identification of family members and/or associates that worked at the store. Included are: Charlie Wm. Swain; Elizabeth Jane (nee Laney) Swain, wife of Charlie; Fergus Heath Disharoon; Maud Anna (nee Swain) Disharoon, wife of Fergus; Margaret Elizabeth Disharoon, daughter of Fergus and Maud; John Franklin Disharoon; and Sam McDaniel.</p>
<p>Philip G. Ferguson (1824-1887) was a writer and journalist. He worked at the Santa Cruz Banner (Mexico) during the 1840s, and is noted of publishing a paper in Ste. Genevieve (date unknown). Sometime prior to 1856, he made his way to St. Louis where he published poems, worked for the <i>Missouri Democrat, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat,</i> and </i>the Herald</i>, and became president of the Press Club of St. Louis and secretary of the Humane Society of Missouri. In 1859, he also wrote for the <i>Wilkes' Spirit of the Times (New York [N.Y.])</i>. Around 1869, Ferguson also acquired the nickname "Jenks."
<p>Philip's sister, Lucy Francis (nee Ferguson) Disharoon (1822-1904) married Thomas L. Disharoon in 1840. She is the grandmother of Fergus and Russel Disharoon, also featured in the collection.</p>
