This is a report on the results of a cultural resources pre-reconnaissance survey for PIN 0757 .46. 121, the proposed improvements to Grangebel Park, located in the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York (MCD 10306). The survey was conducted in Winter of 2005 by the staff from the Cultural Resource Survey Program at the New York State Museum, as part of an interagency agreement between the New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Education Department. All field notes and photographs generated by this
survey are curated at the New York State Museum. The purpose of the study is to assess the sensitivity of the project area for the presence of prehistoric and
historic period archaeological resources, and make recommendations for further archaeological testing within the project limits. All aspects of this study were conducted according to the guidelines and specifications outlined in the New York State Education Department Cultural Resources Survey Program Work Scope Specifications for Cultural Resource Investigations on New York State Department of Transportation Projects (NYSED 2004). According to these guidelines: Phase IA investigations are intended to gather information concerning the environmental/physical setting of a specific project area as well as its cultural setting. It is the interrelationship of the physical environment and the cultural/historical setting that provides the basis for the sensitivity assessment. The information and the analyses performed should assist reviewers in understanding and evaluating the importance of environmental and
cultural/historical resources within and surrounding the project area. Finally, it should also provide the rationale for developing the research design, the sensitivity assessment, and for selecting appropriate Phase IB field methodology
as well as for evaluating project impacts. The survey consists of documentary research and field investigations to locate all known archaeological
sites within the project area, and to access the potential for the presence of additional sites. In addition, all map documented and standing structures older than fifty years within the project area are identified.
(New York State Department of Transportation)与纽约州教育部(New York State Education Department,简称NYSED)跨部门合作协议项下的工作内容。
