In 2007 a national assessment was carried out, which was commissioned by the Flemish government, to assess the extent to which students have sufficient skills to read, listen and write in French at the end of the first grade of secondary education (A-stream). Data were collected through a written reading, listening and writing test. The reading test was administered to a representative sample of 9366 students from 103 Flemish secondary schools. A subsample of 2895 pupils also participated in the writing test, and a subsample of 1261 pupils participated in the listening test. Tests were supplemented with questionnaires for students, parents and French teachers. The student questionnaire collected, among other things, information on their motivation and perceptions of the French classes. The parent questionnaire collected information on their child and the family situation. The teachers were questioned about their teaching experience and didactic approach. The response rates to these questionnaires were 96% for the student questionnaire, 91% for the parent questionnaire and 94% for the teacher questionnaire.
